REB 42 1984 France p. 265-287 Ch. Walter, Expressionism and Hellenism. — The author examines some of the difficulties which occur when terminology useful for describing tendencies in classical and Renaissance art is transposed for the study of Byzantine art. He challenges the notion that early Byzantine art prolongs the traditions of Spätantike, on the grounds that a radical change occurred in the motivation of art production under Constantine I. He then contrasts the art production of the Byzantine Humanist revival after Iconoclasm with that of the Renaissance. He concludes that a terminology must be elaborated which is consonant with the subordinate place attributed to style in Byzantine art production.Walter Christopher. Expressionism a...
